he becomes famous after death, he becomes happy after death, when he is reunited with patroclus in the afterlife. 

and remember when achilles asked him to swear it, patroclus had asked “why me?” and achilles replied “because you are the reason.” 

achilles was right. in his last moments as a spirit on earth, patroclus made achilles memorable, he redeemed his fame and memory through achilles’ mother. patroclus made achilles happy when he was allowed to enter the underworld and reunite with his lover.
